Getting to Know Jesus
What do you do if you want to get to know someone? You make time for that person. You talk to that person and you listen. You ask questions. You find out that person’s likes and dislikes. Getting to know Jesus is no different.
I am blessed to have found an awesome growth group with a wonderful leader. She takes the time to study the scripture so she is well informed before coming to the group. This past session, she covered this verse:
10 that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,
Philippians 3:10 (NKJV)
Now, I’d already read that verse, but I hadn’t put much thought to it. I continued reading, without taking the time to gather the actual meaning of what Paul was saying. But, our growth group leader really dug into that. Paul wanted to KNOW Jesus, not just hear stories about Him.
The first paragraph of this blog is from the group leader, not me. But it makes perfect sense. The same things you would do if you really wanted to know someone are the same things you should do when you want to know Jesus.
What we need to do
Make time for Him. Set aside some time to study His word. Read the Bible or listen to the audio. Also, find a good Bible study group. There are also some great ones online.
Talk to Him and listen. Set aside time to pray. During prayer, ensure you have some quiet time to see if He responds. Don’t worry about being formal or saying a certain prayer, just start talking.
Ask questions. Don’t be afraid to ask Him questions. I do it often because there are things I just don’t understand. Be sure to include the quiet time to listen.
Find out likes and dislikes. Read and study the Bible. There are lots of free study guides online to help. I use them a lot. They help me understand the verses so much more. This is God’s word to us.
Getting to know Jesus is just like getting to know anyone. You have to make the effort to learn about Him and understand Him. Take the time to talk to Him and listen to Him. But, unlike the outcome of knowing another person, the outcome to knowing Jesus leads to everlasting life.
Have a blessed day.
