Am I A Lukewarm Christian?
I’m currently doing a Bible study in my home. The most recent chapter discussed lukewarm Christians. I went into thinking that I was not a lukewarm Christian. I ended it with the realization that, in some circumstances, my actions do seem rather lukewarm.
What is Wrong with Lukewarm?
Heat can purify and cold and refresh but lukewarm does nothing. Think about it this way. When you order coffee at your favorite coffee shop, you order it either hot or cold. I don’t think I’ve ever heard of anyone requesting lukewarm coffee. Why? Because it does nothing for you. It won’t warm you up nor will it refresh you. Also, to me it just takes disgusting.
What Does Jesus Say About A Lukewarm Christian?
In Revelation 3 it says:
15 “‘I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! 16 So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth.
Revelation 3:15 – 16
Jesus despises lukewarm Christians to the point where He said He’d spit them out. Those who are lukewarm don’t help the Church. The eyes of the world are watching, and use lukewarm Christians as examples of hypocrisy. They are bearing no fruit.
16 You will recognize them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 So, every healthy tree bears good fruit, but the diseased tree bears bad fruit.
Matthew 7:16–17 (ESV)
Jesus Isn’t In That Church
Also, take note that Jesus is standing outside of the church.
20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.
Revelation 3:20
Lukewarm actions are not indicative of a church that is following Christ. If you aren’t being obedient regarding the teachings of Jesus, then you must ask yourself if you’re truly saved. I’m NOT saying that you aren’t saved. However, if you don’t feel convicted about this and you know that you are lukewarm, then that is something you must ask yourself.
My Lukewarm Lifestyle
It’s definitely something that I asked myself. People in my church and that know me personally know my heart, but my neighbors don’t. My community doesn’t. Why? Because I don’t reach out. I don’t spread the Gospel, I don’t spread the love, I barely speak. I chit chat with my new neighbors, but if it starts to go beyond a couple of minutes, I tend to wind it down. Why I don’t know. It’s a perfect time to share Christ.
In my old city, I actually did a lot more. I purchased a case of Bibles and gave them out for free at flea markets. If they didn’t want a Bible, I offered them a bookmark with John 3:16 and a way to learn more about Jesus. But now, nothing. Wonderful opportunities to meet new people are opening up, I need to go out with boldness and love.
What About You?
What about you? Do you feel you’re a lukewarm Christian or are you on fire? Are you afraid? Pray for courage and opportunities. God will meet you where you are. You have to be willing to take the next step.
