Bragging About Giving

Are You Asking Others to Help or Are You Bragging About Giving

Bragging About Giving

I did a blog post recently on gloating, but I wanted to do one specifically on bragging. I know someone who I believe comes from a genuine place. However, things can appear distorted depending on how you put it out there. One thing, in particular, is bragging about giving.

We should donate to others. If we are followers of Jesus, we will love others. Helping those in need shows our love for our neighbors and it pleases God.

16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.
Hebrews 13:16

I feel that it is good to encourage others to give also. Sometimes, letting it be known that you are supporting a cause is enough to get others to consider it as well. But, there is a fine line between showing to encourage and showing to brag.

6 “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven.
Matthew 6:1

Confrontational Posting

If you see, “I gave, can anyone else say they did?”, what reaction would you have? If you know the person, you may understand that she is trying to get others to consider giving as well. However, if you just see that question on its own, you can consider it as bragging. I’m not saying it is but look at the tone of the question. It’s challenging, not encouraging.

Before we speak (or post), we must consider what we are saying and why we are saying it. Is it coming from a place of encouragement? If so, will people understand it that way? If not, then I ask that you pray about it and ask yourself why you feel the need to ask the question. Are you seeking accolades from your peers?

What’s In Your Heart?

I’m not writing this to discourage anyone from telling others. I’m only asking that you look into your heart first. Our giving should be in secret. It is okay to ask others to help with a situation you feel needs help, but bragging about giving is not okay. Seek wisdom by praying and listening to God.

Have a blessed and prosperous week.
