Freed from sin.
Satan and his demons seek to accuse us. No matter what good we do, he will find the bad and wear us down with it. Without Jesus, we have nothing to look forward to but an eternity of damnation. However, Jesus freed us from this future. How did Jesus free us? Let’s look at Hebrews 2 for answers.
14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.
Hebrews 2:14-15 (ESV)
Four points to take from these verses.
1. We are human. The children refer to us and we are merely flesh and blood. Jesus was born of Mary so that He could be human.
2. Jesus could only die if He was human. Jesus is part of the Trinity, God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. This means that He could not die unless He became human.
3. Jesus destroyed the devil. This doesn’t mean Satan himself was destroyed. Satan’s capacity to damn us was removed.
4. Jesus came to free us from slavery to the fear of death. Everyone has a deep, subconscious fear of death. We are set free from that by the power of Christ who came down to live as human to die and save us from death.
How did Jesus remove Satan’s damnation?
13 And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, 14 by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. 15 He disarmed the rulers and authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Colossians 2:13-15 (ESV)
When Jesus allowed Himself to be nailed to that cross, he canceled the record of debt that stood against us. He took away our sins by nailing them to the cross. This is how he disarmed the rulers and authorities, which are the demonic forces that continue to accuse us.
We are human. Jesus was born of a virgin so that He could die on the cross. By dying on that cross, He paid our debt of sin. Therefore, anyone who accepts Jesus as their Savior and are born again never have to fear eternal damnation. You do not have to fear death.
Prayer for the day.
Father, I thank you for the cross. I thank you for removing the fear of eternal damnation by canceling my sin debt. I pray that everyone realizes the incredible sacrifice that Jesus made for us and accepts the offer of salvation.
In Jesus’ name.
Amen
