Rebuking Toxic Thoughts with Scripture

I’ve been battling something for several years. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. However, I was trying to handle it on my own. I wondered why I constantly dealt with it. I am a believer and thought that it would be handled. However, once I understood that I needed to use the word of God, not my own power, then, I got the upper hand. I started rebuking toxic thoughts with scripture.

When Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days, his human body was weak. The devil tried to take advantage of His tired state and attempted to tempt Jesus. However, Jesus used scripture every time. He had prayed over those 40 days and His spirit was strong.

Jesus Used Scripture

Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil. 2 And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred. 3 And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. 4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple, 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. 7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them; 9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me. 10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.
Matthew 4:1-11 (KJV)

Meditate on God’s Word

Now, instead of relying on my own strength, or obvious lack of it, I rely on God’s word. When toxic thoughts start to take over, I repeat the promises of God. His word is all I need to regain control. I say them out loud and firmly. My strength comes from God, not me.

The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.
Exodus 14:14 (KJV)

The devil prowls around like a lion, seeking to destroy. With everything happening right now, it’s easy to get caught up in anger and animosity. However, stand firm in your faith. Meditate on the scriptures daily. Treat them nourishment for your soul. Rebuke those toxic thoughts with scripture.

Have a blessed and prosperous week!

Are you struggling with the belief that God actually loves you? Do you struggle to believe that He wants a real relationship with you? I struggled with this for years. Through studying the scripture, I grew to understand God’s love, grace, and mercy. I created a 30-day book that I believe will help you, too.
