I did a video on this awhile back. I’m turning it into a blog post because I get a monthly email about a ‘ladies day’ that promises mimosas and psychic readings. I used to be really into those types of things. I felt that being followed around by a ‘ghost’ was a good thing and it was fun telling my friends about it. I’d always felt the psychics were, for the most part, fake, but there was one I thought was really reaching out to dead relatives.
But, the more I started to study the Word, the more I started to understand what I was dealing with. I also started to see how God wants us to have nothing to do with things like this. Actually, God’s feelings on this are very clear.
So, should you ever visit a psychic?
Short answer, no. Long answer, ghosts and spirit guides are not what you think they are. Psychics, mediums, and fortune tellers are also not what you think they are. Many are simply charlatans, out to make a quick buck by feeding you a bunch of junk. With today’s technology, it’s not hard to find out information about people.
But, there are some who seem to have the ability to know things about you that they simply should not know. But this knowledge is not coming from a deceased relative. Once a person dies, there is nothing in the Bible indicating that they are allowed to return.
Consider the Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. The rich man was in Hades and saw Lazarus across the chasm in Abraham’s bosom.
Luke 16:27-31
27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”
The rich man begged to have Lazarus warn his brothers of their potential fate, but was shut down. Nothing in the Bible indicates a change in that stance. So, if no one is allowed to return from the dead, how does a psychic get her or his information?
They are being contacted by a demon.
Acts shows that the fortune teller that followed Paul and Silas around had an evil spirit, which Paul exercised from her.
Acts 16:16-18
16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a female slave who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.” 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so annoyed that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
Make no mistake, this was not a good spirit. If it were, Paul would not have exercised it from her body. Satan and his servants have the ability to trick us into believing that they are someone else.
2 Corinthians 11: 14-15
14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 15 It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions deserve.
Satan and his demons are our enemy. They will do anything to come between us and God. Causing someone to believe in ghosts, horoscopes, astrology, etc. is just another way to separate you from the Word of God.
Once they get you hooked on that nonsense, they will attempt to drag you down with them. God actually forbids us from this practice.
Leviticus 19:31
31 “‘Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.
God does not want us playing around with this stuff.
Leviticus 20:6
6 “If a person turns to mediums and necromancers, whoring after them, I will set my face against that person and will cut him off from among his people.
Look what happened to King Saul.
1 Chronicles 10:13
13 So Saul died for his breach of faith. He broke faith with the Lord in that he did not keep the command of the Lord, and also consulted a medium, seeking guidance.
And check out one of the many ways King Manasseh angered the Lord.
2 Kings 21:6
6 And he burned his son as an offering and used fortune-telling and omens and dealt with mediums and with necromancers. He did much evil in the sight of the Lord, provoking him to anger.
1st Timothy also gives a warning to stay away from such things.
1 Timothy 4:1
4 Now the Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons,
So, what should you do when seeking guidance? Simple, ask God for discernment. Study your Bible and pray for wisdom.
James 1:5
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.
Find a good bible study group in your area. If you’re having trouble, ask your pastor for guidance. Stay away from such foolishness as mediums, psychics, fortune tellers, numerologists, etc. That is nothing but a gateway to hell.
Have a blessed day.
