Redemption defined
1. the action of saving or being saved from sin, error, or evil.
2. the action of regaining or gaining possession of something in exchange for payment, or clearing a debt.
When we continue to sin, we are in bondage to that sin. In order to be delivered from bondage, there is typically an exchange of some sort. A payment to release that person from bondage. It clears the debt and redeems the person.
7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace,
Ephesians 1:7 (ESV)
When Jesus allowed Himself to be nailed to that cross, suffering immeasurable pain, he redeemed us. He cleared our debt. We are sinners, destined for hell. But, through Jesus, we were redeemed; offered salvation without the requirement of any additional sacrifices. Jesus was that sacrifice.
We don’t have to remain in bondage. Jesus has freed us. Let’s celebrate our freedom by glorifying the Father.
