I was initially skeptical.
I’m doing a 40-day program where I’m reading a promise of God each day. We are to read the verses, write the verses, and there are several questions that we’re to meditate on. I also write out the answers those questions. Before starting it, I wondered what good would it do to write down scripture. I figured that reading it was just as good.
Boy was I wrong!
Reading and listening to scripture are both great things. But writing it down takes time and I get to focus on each word. It has helped me become more emotionally involved in the scripture. When you write down scripture, it helps you to focus more on what God is saying to you.
It’s just like school when you had to copy things off of a board. You put a bit of thought into what you were writing and it helped you to remember. It narrowed your focus because it forced you to think.
God ordered it for the kings of Israel.
There is a passage in Deuteronomy where God instructs the future kings of Israel to write down the law.
18 “And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself in a book a copy of this law, approved by the Levitical priests.
Deuteronomy 17:15 (ESV)
God knew that the Israelites would want a king and he gave them a spiritual discipline that would be required. They were to write the laws, keep the law with them, and read them often. That would keep the kings devoted to His word.
It’s a great tool for meditation.
I’m glad that I decided to go along with this program and write down scripture. This has helped me immensely with meditating on God’s words. It helps me focus clearly on what God is saying to me. It helps me stay devoted to God’s word and I feel his presence very strongly when I do it.
The next time you’re meditating on the Word, write down scripture and see how well it helps you focus.
